Historic SS United States Set for Final Voyage as World’s Largest Artificial Reef
The legendary SS United States is scheduled to be sunk off the Florida coast next month, transforming the historic ocean liner into a massive artificial reef.
POLICY WIRE — Destin, Florida — The iconic ocean liner SS United States is preparing for its final mission, with local officials in Okaloosa County announcing plans to submerge the vessel as the world’s largest artificial reef.
Authorities expect the sinking to occur during the second week of November, approximately 22 nautical miles, or 41 kilometers, southwest of Destin. While the timeline remains subject to change based on prevailing weather conditions, the project marks a significant milestone for the region.
County officials highlighted the move as a strategic effort to bolster both environmental conservation and the local tourism economy. The nearly 1,000-foot, or 305-meter, ship, which famously claimed the transatlantic speed record during its 1952 maiden voyage, will join a network of over 500 artificial reefs.
Despite previous efforts by preservationists to save the historic vessel, high costs ultimately prevented its restoration. Supporters now anticipate that the ship will become a premier destination for divers and anglers, potentially generating millions of dollars in annual revenue for local businesses.
