The Dark Legacy of a Cursed Mansion: Unraveling the Murder of Mike Harding
Investigating the chilling murder of Mike Harding in a Tennessee mansion. Policy Wire explores the conspiracy, the betrayal, and the quest for justice.
POLICY WIRE — Burkesville, Kentucky — The serene landscape along the Kentucky-Tennessee border became the site of a grim discovery in September 2022 when Mike Harding, a California transplant, was found murdered inside a vacant property. The victim, an HVAC business owner, had been lured to the site under the guise of a service call, only to be shot four times.
The investigation into Harding’s death quickly turned toward his wife, Julie Harding, a captain with the California Highway Patrol. Despite her law enforcement background, Julie became a person of interest after investigators uncovered a web of financial disputes, a contentious divorce, and a series of suspicious communications.
Detective BJ Burton of the Kentucky State Police led the probe, which revealed that the victim had been targeted by a burner phone used to arrange the meeting. Digital forensics eventually linked the device to Thomas O’Donnell, a Texas man who had maintained an extensive, months-long phone relationship with Julie Harding.
While Julie Harding was never charged with murder, she faced legal trouble for trespassing after stealing her late husband’s dog, Charlie, from a caretaker. Shortly after her suspension from the California Highway Patrol and the arrest of her alleged co-conspirator, Julie was found dead from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound at the couple’s Tennessee home.
In April 2026, Thomas O’Donnell stood trial for the murder of Mike Harding. Although his defense team argued that he was present at the scene but did not pull the trigger, a jury found him guilty of murder. O’Donnell was subsequently sentenced to life in prison with the possibility of parole after 20 years.
