Intelligence Memo Warns of Advanced Iranian Plots Targeting U.S. Personnel Abroad
Director of National Intelligence Jay Clayton warns of advanced Iranian plots targeting U.S. personnel, prompting staff evacuations across the Middle East.
POLICY WIRE — Washington, D.C. — Director of National Intelligence Jay Clayton issued a stark warning on Friday, reporting that Iran has significantly escalated its operations aimed at U.S. personnel stationed overseas.
In an unclassified memo dated October 23 and addressed to Secretary of State Marco Rubio, Clayton stated that lethal plotting by Iranian actors against American citizens has progressed to advanced stages within the Middle East and several other nations.
While the document does not specify particular locations or identify individual targets, it confirms that senior State Department officials have been fully briefed on the intelligence. The warning arrives as the Trump administration evaluates the possibility of resuming military strikes against Iran.
In response to the heightened threat, the State Department has initiated a quiet reduction of its footprint in the region. Earlier this week, officials ordered the departure of family members and nonessential staff from Saudi Arabia.
By Friday, the department had also implemented staffing restrictions at various U.S. embassies, including facilities in Lebanon, Jordan, Qatar, and the United Arab Emirates.
