Ukraine Restores Full Starlink Speed After Week of Military Disruptions
Ukraine regains full Starlink and Starshield speeds for frontline drones following diplomatic talks, ending a week of operational disruptions.
POLICY WIRE — Kyiv, Ukraine — Ukraine has successfully restored complete functionality to its Starlink satellite network for high-speed equipment and frontline drones, according to the defense minister on Saturday.
The resolution brings an end to speed restrictions that Ukrainian authorities stated had severely hampered military operations along the front lines for a duration exceeding one week.
Monitoring infrastructure operated by the Defense Ministry confirmed that connections have stabilized for objects moving at speeds greater than 250 mph, Defense Minister Yevhenii Khmara informed reporters.
The restrictions impacted Starshield, which serves as the military-grade variant of SpaceX’s satellite internet infrastructure and acts as the foundational network for Ukrainian communications and drone missions.
The sudden caps imposed last week generated widespread concern among government leaders and military commanders, who documented interrupted missions and lost unmanned aerial vehicles.
This technological dispute unfolded as American diplomats initiated a fresh diplomatic initiative to resolve the ongoing conflict, with Russia agreeing on Wednesday to restart tripartite negotiations involving Washington and Kyiv next month.
Additionally, Kyiv and Moscow accepted a localized ceasefire on Friday that was facilitated by first lady Melania Trump concerning Oleshky, a heavily damaged, Russian-occupied settlement located in the southern Kherson region of Ukraine.
The satellite disruption intensified existing diplomatic friction between Kyiv and Washington, which was already aggravated by an arrangement concerning Russian diesel imports negotiated by President Donald Trump that Ukrainian officials regarded as a betrayal.
Khmara attributed the restoration of services to direct communication channels and the diplomatic efforts of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy directed toward Washington.
The defense minister emphasized that achieving this resolution was critically important for military operations, frontline logistics, drone deployment, and communication networks.
President Zelenskyy noted on Friday that the country was still encountering speed throttles across Starlink and Starshield infrastructure.
Unanswered questions have lingered since the previous week regarding the individual or entity responsible for initiating the bandwidth restrictions on the satellite internet platform created by Elon Musk, which Ukraine has utilized extensively for years to defend against Russian military offensives.
