Philippines Authorities Launch Investigation Into Thomas Markle Over Child Abuse Image Allegations
Philippines officials are investigating claims that Thomas Markle possessed child abuse material. Meghan Markle addresses the disturbing allegations.
POLICY WIRE — Cebu, Philippines — Authorities in the Philippines have launched an investigation into allegations that Thomas Markle, the father of the Duchess of Sussex, possessed images of child sexual abuse at his former residence in Cebu.
The inquiry follows claims made by Thomas Markle Jr., who told The Sun that he discovered hundreds of illicit images and videos on electronic devices left behind when his father relocated from the Philippines earlier this year. Nicholas Ty, an undersecretary for the Philippines Department of Justice, confirmed that the agency’s Anti-Trafficking and Online Sexual Abuse and Exploitation of Children taskforce is actively looking into the matter.
Thomas Markle Jr. stated that he reported the discovery to the FBI, the Pennsylvania state police, and the National Centre for Exploited and Missing Children in July. He claimed he found the material while searching through his father’s belongings for a phone, adding that he felt compelled to report the findings despite their familial relationship.
In response to the accusations, Thomas Markle Sr. vehemently denied the claims, labeling them as sick lies and asserting that he is being unfairly targeted by his son. He expressed shock and hurt, maintaining that he could never commit such acts.
The Duchess of Sussex released a statement expressing deep distress regarding the news. She revealed that she was made aware of troubling allegations against her father in 2018 after a letter was sent to Scotland Yard, and she was previously assured that the matter was being investigated.
Meghan noted that her decision to maintain distance from her father and prevent contact with her children was intended to protect them. She stated that she hopes justice will be served and that the safety of children remains the primary priority.
The Metropolitan Police clarified that they are not currently investigating Mr. Markle Sr. However, the force is conducting internal inquiries to determine if officers from the Royalty and Specialist Protection Command were involved in handling the 2018 letter.
Thomas Markle Sr. previously resided in Cebu but returned to the United States following significant health issues, including a stroke and a leg amputation. He is reportedly currently residing in a rehabilitation facility in Florida.
