POLICY WIRE — Moscow, Russia — The Kremlin officially confirmed on Friday that a localized ceasefire has been established in the Russian-occupied city of Oleshky. This agreement, brokered by U.S. First Lady Melania Trump, aims to facilitate the safe evacuation of residents from the conflict-stricken area in Ukraine’s Kherson region.
Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov addressed the media on Friday, noting that all civilians who wish to depart Oleshky will be granted safe passage. Officials anticipate that the full evacuation process will require at least several days to complete.
Regarding the diplomatic efforts behind the pause in hostilities, Peskov acknowledged the involvement of the U.S. First Lady. According to reports from the Russian outlet Ura.ru, Peskov stated that she had made a significant contribution to agreeing on the humanitarian operation.
The White House announced earlier on Friday that the localized ceasefire is scheduled to commence next Thursday. Both Russian and Ukrainian military representatives are currently coordinating to finalize the specific timetable for the operation.
