New Zealand Military Chief Resigns Following Undisclosed Inappropriate Relationship
New Zealand Defence Force Chief Air Marshal Tony Davies resigns after admitting to an undisclosed inappropriate relationship during his time in command.
POLICY WIRE — Wellington, New Zealand — The leader of New Zealand’s armed forces has stepped down from his post following the revelation of an inappropriate relationship he maintained while serving in a unit command role. The Defence Force confirmed the resignation on Friday, October 23.
Air Marshal Tony Davies acknowledged that his departure stems from personal reasons and past lapses in judgment. He stated that his actions were contrary to the values upheld by the Defence Force and expressed regret for failing to disclose the relationship when he had the opportunity to do so.
Defence Minister Paul Goldsmith noted that the circumstances surrounding the resignation are a source of significant disappointment for the armed forces. He emphasized that the decision was based on integrity issues that were not previously revealed, adding that both parties agreed Davies’ position was no longer tenable.
The military has referred the matter to an independent oversight body for further review. While the Defence Force declined to provide additional details when approached for comment, they confirmed that Davies has requested privacy to focus on his family.
Davies, who previously served as the head of the air force, had been appointed as the chief of the New Zealand military in 2024.
