POLICY WIRE — Chicago, USA — Caleb Williams delivered a standout performance on Thursday night, throwing for 308 yards and two touchdowns to lead the Chicago Bears to a 30-24 victory over the New England Patriots.
Returning to the field for his second game following a right hamstring injury, Williams completed 22 of 33 passes. This effort marked the first time a Bears quarterback has surpassed 300 passing yards in consecutive games since Mitch Trubisky achieved the feat in 2018.
The matchup featured a duel between the top two picks of the 2024 NFL draft, with Williams, the No. 1 selection, facing off against No. 3 pick Drake Maye. Maye finished the night 24 for 31 with 321 yards and two touchdowns, though he also threw a costly interception in the end zone during the first half.
Chicago’s offense was bolstered by Luther Burden, who recorded four receptions for 130 yards, and Colston Loveland, who hauled in a 12-yard touchdown pass. Kicker Cairo Santos secured the win with a career-long 58-yard field goal with 1:34 remaining, which also tied the franchise record.
The Patriots, who entered the game on a three-game winning streak, saw Rhamondre Stevenson contribute five catches for 93 yards and a touchdown. Eli Raridon also added a 30-yard scoring reception in the third quarter.
Following Santos’ late field goal, Maye orchestrated a drive that set up an Andy Borregales 47-yard field goal with 37 seconds left. However, the Bears successfully recovered the subsequent onside kick to seal the win.
The game served as the first home appearance for Chicago since the passing of Mike Ditka on Oct. 9. The organization honored the Hall of Fame coach with a pregame moment of silence and distributed fake mustaches to the 60,520 fans in attendance, many of whom wore sweaters reminiscent of Ditka’s sideline attire.
Injury reports from the contest included Bears cornerback Malik Muhammad, who exited with a toe injury, and tight end Cole Kmet, who suffered a right knee injury late in the fourth quarter. For the Patriots, safety Kevin Byard briefly left the game for medical evaluation, and defensive tackle Christian Barmore departed late in the action.
The Bears are now 5-2 on the season and are scheduled to face Seattle on the road on Nov. 2. The Patriots fall to 4-3 following the loss.
