POLICY WIRE — Rawalpindi, Pakistan — England captain Harry Brook has etched his name into the history books, delivering the fastest double century in the history of One-Day International cricket. During a dominant performance against Sri Lanka, Brook reached the 200-run milestone in just 114 balls, eclipsing the previous record of 117 deliveries set by Shubman Gill only last month.
The historic innings propelled England to a formidable total of 429-4. Brook, who finished with 202 runs off 116 balls, became the first English player to ever record a double century in the ODI format, surpassing the previous national record of 182 held by Ben Stokes since 2023.
The captain’s approach was marked by a calculated transition from patience to aggression. After a cautious start that saw him score 13 runs from his first 24 balls, he accelerated to reach his fifty in 42 deliveries and his century in 75. Once he crossed the three-figure mark, he required only 39 additional balls to reach his double century.
This achievement places Brook in an elite category of cricketers. He is now only the second player in history, alongside Chris Gayle, to have recorded a 300 in Test cricket, a 200 in ODIs, and a century in T20 Internationals. His performance marks the 14th double century in men’s ODI history and stands as the 12th highest individual score in the format.
Brook’s success in Pakistan continues a trend of high-level performance in the region, where he maintains a Test average exceeding 80, highlighted by a 317-run effort in Multan two years ago. Statistical analysis also indicates that the captaincy brings out his best form; he currently averages 56.04 in ODIs and 47.57 in T20Is while leading the side, compared to significantly lower averages when he is not in the captain’s role.
Following a loss to Pakistan in the series opener, the captain’s record-breaking display provided a critical response for his team. While the match result remains a focal point for cricket fans, Brook’s ability to balance defensive reading of the pitch with explosive boundary hitting has solidified his status as a premier talent in the England lineup.
