Conservative Groups Leverage Taxpayer Funds to Expand Classical Christian Schools
Conservative organizations are utilizing new taxpayer-funded scholarships to rapidly scale classical Christian education across the United States.
POLICY WIRE — Washington, D.C. — Conservative coalitions are aggressively pursuing the expansion of classical Christian education by tapping into newly available taxpayer-funded scholarship programs. This educational model, which emphasizes Western history, rhetorical training, and a Christian worldview, is seeing a surge in popularity alongside a broader national movement to direct public funds toward private schooling.
The Association of Classical Christian Schools (ACCS) has partnered with influential organizations like the Heritage Foundation and Turning Point Education to set an ambitious target: the creation or conversion of 5,000 schools over the next decade, aiming to serve 1.5 million students. ACCS President David Goodwin described the current landscape as a historic opportunity, noting that the availability of public funding has fundamentally changed the growth potential for these institutions.
The initiative, dubbed the Battle for the American School, draws inspiration from a book co-authored by Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, who has been a vocal proponent of the movement. While the ACCS network has grown to include roughly 500 schools, critics argue that the influx of public money into private, religious institutions raises significant concerns regarding the separation of church and state and the potential impact on the public school system.
In Texas, the impact of this funding shift is already visible. The state recently launched a $1 billion program providing eligible families with at least $10,474 for private education expenses. Administrators like Keith Castello are utilizing these Texas Education Freedom Accounts to launch new campuses, with some schools reporting that a substantial portion of their student body is now relying on state-provided financial aid.
