New Zealanders abroad can now cast ballots for the 2026 General Election. Discover deadlines, downloading steps, and overseas voting guidelines.
POLICY WIRE — Wellington, New Zealand — New Zealanders residing or traveling abroad officially gained the ability to cast their ballots for the upcoming 2026 general election on Wednesday, 21 October, kicking off an important electoral window ahead of domestic voting.
Voters living overseas must provide the final New Zealand address where they resided for a period of one month or longer, as this location establishes their eligible electorate. Citizens are also encouraged to supply an email address to receive direct updates regarding the 2026 General Election.
Ballot papers are not mailed automatically to individuals residing abroad. The primary method for participation involves downloading voting materials directly from the official website, completing the paperwork, and subsequently uploading the finished documents.
Voters must note that postal vote applications dispatched from New Zealand or mailed back to the country are no longer permitted. Furthermore, individuals registered on the unpublished roll cannot download their voting documents and must instead reach out to the nearest overseas voting location to cast a ballot in person or request a postal option.
Domestic voting inside New Zealand is scheduled to commence on Monday 26 October and will conclude at 7pm on election day, Saturday 7 November, allowing domestic participants to cast ballots at any voting location within their specific electorate.
For international participants, overseas voting closes at 12:00 pm local time on Friday 6 November, or no later than 4:00 pm local time on the same day at physical overseas voting stations. All voting officially wraps up at 7:00 pm New Zealand time on election day, Saturday 7 November.
Additional details covering international voting procedures, operating hours, and the physical addresses of overseas voting stations are accessible online at vote.nz/overseas. Recent electoral cycles have seen a steady increase in both the volume of overseas ballots cast and total international voter enrollment.
