Japan's special envoy Yohei Sasakawa met with Myanmar junta chief Min Aung Hlaing in Naypyitaw to discuss peace efforts and flood recovery assistance.
POLICY WIRE — Naypyitaw, Myanmar — Japanese philanthropist and special envoy Yohei Sasakawa held a high-level meeting with Myanmar’s junta leader Min Aung Hlaing on Tuesday in the capital city of Naypyitaw. The encounter marks a notable moment in the ongoing international efforts to re-engage with the Southeast Asian nation following an extended period of diplomatic isolation.
Sasakawa, who serves as the honorary chair of the Nippon Foundation and acts as Japan’s special envoy for national reconciliation in Myanmar, utilized the visit to address the country’s internal peace process. According to reports from state media, the two figures explored potential avenues for the Nippon Foundation to provide support for these reconciliation initiatives.
The discussions also pivoted toward urgent humanitarian concerns, specifically focusing on rehabilitation efforts in the Ayeyarwady Region. The area has faced significant challenges following a major breach in the Ngawun River embankment near Lemyethna Township on July 30, which left thousands of residents displaced and in critical need of aid.
