Nigeria Reports First Ebola Case as Regional Outbreak Intensifies
Nigeria confirms its first imported Ebola case in Abuja following a traveler's arrival from Uganda. Health officials monitor the spreading regional outbreak.
POLICY WIRE — Abuja, Nigeria — Health officials in Nigeria have officially confirmed the nation’s first case of the Ebola Bundibugyo virus. The detection marks the fifth country to identify the virus since the current outbreak was declared in the Democratic Republic of the Congo on May 15, 2026.
The patient, a woman who recently traveled from Uganda, tested positive for the virus after arriving in the Federal Capital Territory. According to the Health Ministry, the individual began exhibiting symptoms on October 7 and sought medical attention at a private facility in Abuja on October 11, where the diagnosis was subsequently confirmed.
This development makes Nigeria the first West African nation to report a case connected to the ongoing crisis currently affecting East Africa. The region is already grappling with the spread of the disease, which has resulted in nine confirmed infections in Kenya.
While this is the first instance of the virus in Nigeria during the current emergency, the country has a history of managing such health threats. Nigeria successfully contained a previous Ebola outbreak in 2014.
