Christina Applegate Reveals Medical Misdiagnosis: ‘I’m Back at Square One’
Actor Christina Applegate shares that her doctor has ruled out multiple sclerosis, leaving her searching for answers regarding her ongoing health symptoms.
POLICY WIRE — New York, USA — Actor Christina Applegate, who has spent years openly documenting her struggles with multiple sclerosis, announced on Monday that her physician has determined she does not actually have the autoimmune condition.
Speaking on the latest episode of her podcast, MeSsy, alongside co-host Jamie-Lynn Sigler, Applegate shared the confusing update. The actor, who first announced her diagnosis in 2021, noted that she continues to experience every symptom typically associated with the disorder, including the inability to walk from her vehicle to a doctor’s office without assistance.
Dr. Benjamin Greenberg, a neurologist at UT Southwestern Medical Center, explained that MS misdiagnosis rates hover around 10% because there is no single definitive test for the disease. He emphasized that medical professionals often rely on a combination of clinical history and imaging, which can sometimes lead to systemic bias if a diagnosis is prematurely confirmed.
Applegate expressed deep frustration and vulnerability regarding the news, noting that her role as a public advocate for the MS community makes the revelation particularly difficult to process. She remains in search of a clear explanation for her persistent health challenges, which she has previously described in her memoir, “You with the Sad Eyes,” as having significantly limited her daily mobility.
