POLICY WIRE — Westwood, Massachusetts — Kyle Francis Kennedy, a dedicated educator and the granddaughter of Robert F. Kennedy, passed away on September 21 at her home in Westwood. She was 42 years old.
According to an obituary published by Burke Funeral Homes, Kennedy died peacefully, though a specific cause of death was not disclosed. Her passing follows several years of significant medical challenges stemming from a severe spinal cord injury sustained in 2020 that left her paralyzed.
Kennedy was the daughter of Michael LeMoyne Kennedy, the sixth child of Robert F. and Ethel Kennedy. Her father died in a skiing accident in Aspen, Colorado, on December 31, 1997, at the age of 39.
Raised in Cohasset, Massachusetts, Kennedy attended Milton Academy before graduating from Georgetown University. She later earned a master’s degree in early education from Pace University and a second master’s degree in education policy from Harvard.
Her professional life was defined by a commitment to early childhood education. After participating in the Teach for America program in New York City, she became a vocal advocate for charter schooling and equitable elementary education, eventually working with technology firms to improve school curricula.
The obituary noted that Kennedy possessed a formidable intellect and a dry wit. She was deeply devoted to her children, Conor, Josephine, and Declan, and maintained a lifelong passion for the outdoors, even completing the 2019 Boston Marathon under her married name, Kyle Kerr.
Following her 2020 injury, Kennedy pivoted her advocacy toward the rights of people living with disabilities. She notably testified at the Massachusetts State House regarding discrimination within the healthcare system for disabled individuals.
Kennedy is survived by her sons, 12-year-old Conor and 10-year-old Declan, as well as her mother, Victoria Denise Gifford, her brother, Michael LeMoyne Kennedy Jr., her sister, Rory Gifford Kennedy, and her ex-husband, Liam Kerr.
