Germany Summons Iranian Ambassador Following Conviction in Jewish Leader Assassination Plot
Germany has summoned Iran's ambassador after a court sentenced two men for a malicious plot to target Jewish community leaders on behalf of Tehran.
POLICY WIRE — Berlin, Germany — The German Foreign Ministry officially summoned the Iranian ambassador on Monday following a judicial ruling that exposed a state-backed plot to target Jewish community leaders.
The diplomatic move comes just days after the Hanseatic Higher Regional Court in Hamburg handed down prison sentences to two men involved in the conspiracy. One of the defendants, a 54-year-old man, received a sentence of eight and a half years for his role in the operation.
Evidence presented during the trial indicated that the men were acting on behalf of Iranian intelligence services. The court determined that the pair had been planning to assassinate pro-Israeli public figures, including the president of the German-Israeli Society.
German officials have characterized the scheme as a malicious attempt to undermine security within the country. The government emphasized that it maintains a zero-tolerance policy regarding threats against Jewish life or those who advocate for the community.
