No Kings Rallies Sweep U.S. to Push Early Voting Ahead of Midterms
Discover how No Kings rallies across the U.S. urge voters to cast ballots early amidst rising legal battles over mail-in voting and noncitizen ballots.
POLICY WIRE — Washington, United States — Communities and cities nationwide hosted demonstrations on Saturday organized by the No Kings network, aiming to encourage citizens to cast their ballots early in the upcoming midterm elections.
While marketed as nonpartisan, the hundreds of scheduled gatherings sought to capitalize on nearly two years of protests and marches staged by individuals dissatisfied with the presidency of Donald Trump.
In the nation’s capital, a musical ensemble performed for a crowd numbering in the hundreds wearing coats and caps near the Lincoln Memorial, where attendees danced despite the cold conditions while displaying placards reading VOTE EARLY and HANDS OFF MY VOTE.
Atlanta City Councilman Michael Julian Bond addressed local demonstrators, pressing the audience to encourage others to head to the polls ahead of the November 3 general election.
Emphasizing the importance of the ballot, Bond told the crowd that the Constitution grants citizens a single power, asking if they intended to use it.
Comparing civic duty to comic book heroes, Bond urged voters to act like superheroes, noting that characters like Superman, Black Panther, and Wonder Woman do not surrender their abilities, and telling citizens not to give up their power, right, and obligation to vote.
Meanwhile, Donald Trump has maintained a long-standing skepticism regarding mail-in voting, repeatedly asserting without evidence that fraud cost him the 2020 presidential election.
Legal challenges escalated Thursday when the administration filed a lawsuit against California election officials, urging a judge to prohibit the state from counting mail-in ballots from individuals flagged by the federal government as likely noncitizens until their immigration status is verified.
The pressure intensified Friday as the Justice Department issued a warning that local authorities handling and tabulating ballots from suspected noncitizen voters face potential criminal investigations and prosecution.
In response to these moves, Democratic Senators Alex Padilla of California, Sheldon Whitehouse of Rhode Island, and Dick Durbin of Illinois sent a letter earlier that Friday to Attorney General Todd Blanche, demanding a commitment that the Justice Department will refrain from seizing ballots or election materials prior to the certification of the midterms.
