North Korea Unveils AI-Powered ‘Zam-2.0’ High-Speed Torpedo in Naval Test
North Korea confirms the successful underwater test of its new AI-equipped Zam-2.0 torpedo, marking a major advancement in precision-guided naval weaponry.
POLICY WIRE — Seoul, South Korea — North Korea has successfully conducted an underwater test of a sophisticated, high-speed precision-guided torpedo system, according to reports from state media on Saturday.
The Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) identified the new weapon as the Zam-2.0. Officials in Pyongyang characterized the Thursday trial as a significant milestone in the nation’s ongoing naval development efforts.
State media reports highlighted that the torpedo utilizes artificial intelligence technology to manage target detection and guidance. This integration of AI is intended to enhance the weapon’s precision during high-speed operations.
The recent underwater exercise was designed to verify technical upgrades to the system’s propulsion capabilities. KCNA noted that this specific technology was refined through more than 180 individual tests conducted over the previous five years.
While the state news agency described the test as a success, no photographic evidence of the event was released to the public. The announcement follows a series of efforts by the country to modernize its maritime defense systems.
