POLICY WIRE — Bend, Oregon — A horrific act of violence unfolded Thursday afternoon at Silver Rail Elementary School, leaving three children and a teacher dead. Authorities confirmed that the 16-year-old suspect behind the attack was killed by an armed bystander who intervened at the scene.
Bend Police Chief Mike Krantz detailed that the department first received a 911 call at 1 p.m. from a motorist reporting they had been fired upon by an individual wielding a long gun. Shortly thereafter, a flood of emergency calls alerted police that a gunman had breached the elementary school, prompting an immediate lockdown order for the facility.
According to Chief Krantz, a local resident witnessed the suspect entering the school and followed him inside. The bystander engaged the shooter in an exchange of gunfire, ultimately killing him before further harm could be done.
The victims included three children, aged five, eight, and 11, alongside one teacher. Additionally, a seven-year-old child and a second teacher remain in critical condition following the attack. While the suspect was identified as a 16-year-old local resident, officials have not yet released the names of the deceased or the individual who stopped the shooter.
Chief Krantz emphasized that the department is committed to a comprehensive investigation into the tragedy. He urged the community to support one another during this period of profound loss.
Oregon Governor Tina Kotek offered her condolences to the grieving community. She stated, There is going to be time for answering all those questions we all have right now, and searching for more ways to prevent this from happening in the future. But for now, let’s hold each other close in grief and put as much love into the world as possible.
