American Photojournalist and Palestinians Injured in West Bank Settler Clash
Washington Post photojournalist Heidi Levine and several Palestinians were injured during a violent confrontation with masked settlers in the West Bank.
POLICY WIRE — Ramallah, West Bank — A veteran American photojournalist and several Palestinian civilians sustained injuries during a violent confrontation involving masked Israeli men in the West Bank. The incident occurred as Palestinians were engaged in the seasonal olive harvest, according to eyewitness accounts, video evidence, and local authorities.
Heidi Levine, a photojournalist on assignment for the Washington Post, was among those harmed. Footage released by the Foreign Press Association depicts Levine being surrounded by masked individuals, forced to the ground, and beaten before her camera equipment was seized.
Levine was subsequently transported to a hospital in Ramallah for treatment. Images from her bedside reveal significant leg injuries and a bandaged hand. Reflecting on the assault, Levine stated, I was attacked, pushed to the ground. Luckily I had my flak jacket and helmet, otherwise I probably would not even be here, because they just kept kicking and kicking me.
The violence escalated as masked men utilized slingshots and stones against Palestinians, who responded in kind. Additional video footage from the scene captured two vehicles engulfed in flames and a Palestinian man being assisted away from the area with visible facial injuries.
The Palestine Red Crescent Society reported providing medical aid to three individuals in Abu Falah, including one man who sustained a gunshot wound to the thigh, as confirmed by the Palestinian Authority’s official media outlet, WAFA. Further clashes were documented by WAFA near the central West Bank villages of Burqa and Turmus Ayya, where four additional people required treatment.
The Israeli military has announced it is investigating the matter and intends to release a formal statement. While Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has publicly condemned such violence and pledged to suppress attacks by a small faction of youths, incidents have persisted.
Data from the United Nations humanitarian office indicates a sharp rise in attacks against Palestinians since the formation of Israel’s current government in late 2022. The Israeli monitoring group Yesh Din reports that over the past 18 days, there have been 486 violent incidents across 181 localities, with 234 of those directly linked to the olive harvest.
This event follows a similar attack in August, when Israeli settlers targeted three NBC journalists and a Palestinian woman during an interview. Reporting by Policy-Wire (PW)
