Masked Settlers Target Palestinian Olive Harvest in Violent West Bank Raid
Dozens of masked settlers attacked a West Bank olive harvest, injuring a journalist and burning trees. Explore the latest on rising regional violence.
POLICY WIRE — Abu Falah, West Bank — A group of dozens of masked, black-clad militant Israeli settlers launched a coordinated assault on a village olive harvest this past Friday, resulting in injuries to at least two individuals, including Washington Post photojournalist Heidi Levine.
Witnesses observed the attackers throwing rocks at Palestinians and setting fire to olive trees during the annual agricultural event. The incident in Abu Falah is part of a broader surge in settler violence currently impacting the occupied West Bank.
Reports indicate that settlers have targeted farmers, students, residential properties, and vehicles throughout the region. These actions have frequently involved the destruction of agricultural land and the burning of trees, often occurring while settlers are under the protection of the Israeli military.
Data from a Palestinian monitoring center highlights the scale of the ongoing unrest, documenting 530 arrests in September alone. This figure includes 39 children and 15 women and girls, in addition to more than 625 administrative detention orders issued during the same period.
The disruption of the olive harvest has extended to various towns across the occupied territory, where settlers have set fire to both vehicles and crops. These events coincide with separate regional instability, including a recent attack by Iran-backed Houthi rebels in Yemen that resulted in five deaths near a government-used palace.
