German Court Sentences Two Men to Prison for Iran-Backed Assassination Plot Against Jewish Leader
A German court sentences two men up to 8.5 years in prison for plotting to kill a Jewish community leader in an Iran-directed assassination plot.
POLICY WIRE — Frankfurt, Germany — A German court on Thursday delivered prison sentences of up to 8-1/2 years to two men convicted of plotting an assassination targeting the head of a Jewish organization in Germany.
Judicial authorities stated that one of the defendants operated under the direct guidance and recruitment of Iran’s intelligence apparatus.
The Hanseatic Higher Regional Court in Hamburg presided over the case, which involved individuals previously identified by federal prosecutors as a Danish national and an Afghan national living in the country.
One of the primary defendants, previously identified as Danish citizen Ali S., received a sentence of eight years and six months behind bars for preparing a violent attack and engaging in aggravated espionage.
German federal prosecutors built the criminal case around allegations that the pair conspired to carry out targeted assaults against prominent pro-Israel figures and leaders of local Jewish communities.
