Former DUP Leader Jeffrey Donaldson Sentenced to 15 Years for Historic Child Sex Crimes
Former Democratic Unionist Party leader Jeffrey Donaldson receives a 15-year prison sentence at Newry Crown Court for 18 historic child sex offences.
POLICY WIRE — Newry, Northern Ireland — Jeffrey Donaldson, the former head of Northern Ireland’s primary unionist political organization, has been handed a 15-year prison sentence following his conviction for historic child sexual abuse.
The 63-year-old former Democratic Unionist Party (DUP) leader appeared at Newry Crown Court, where he was sentenced for 18 separate offences. These crimes, which involved two victims who were minors at the time, occurred over a period spanning from 1985 to 2008.
A jury unanimously found Donaldson guilty in June of charges that included one count of rape, 13 counts of indecent assault, and four counts of gross indecency. The court heard that the abuse was facilitated by a cover-up involving his wife, Eleanor.
In addition to his 15-year custodial sentence, the judge ordered that Donaldson be placed on the Sex Offenders Register indefinitely. He is also subject to a 10-year Sexual Offences Prevention Order (SOPO).
