Authorities in Illinois have arrested a 19-year-old man accused of plotting a mass shooting at a Hindu temple. Read the latest on the ongoing investigation.
POLICY WIRE — Palatine, Illinois — Law enforcement officials in a Chicago suburb announced on Wednesday the successful prevention of a potential mass shooting, following the arrest of a 19-year-old local resident.
Alexandros Paporakis, who worked as a cashier at a Taco Bell in Palatine, now faces felony charges including the unlawful possession of weapons and making a terrorist threat. Investigators suspect the defendant intended to target the largest Hindu temple located in Aurora, Illinois, though the specific details regarding the planned attack site remain under active investigation.
The arrest occurred Sunday afternoon as Paporakis departed his residence, an operation coordinated by the Palatine and Mount Prospect police departments. Authorities believe the suspect had intended to execute his plan that same day, having previously informed colleagues that Sunday would be a special day.
According to the Cook County State’s Attorney’s Office, coworkers alerted police after receiving disturbing digital communications from Paporakis, which included photographs of tactical gear and a detailed document outlining a mass shooting plot. Prosecutors allege the suspect identified as a white supremacist and expressed a desire to kill Indian people.
During a search of the suspect’s home, detectives discovered an AR-style rifle lacking a serial number, ammunition, loaded magazines, and a gas canister marked with a slur directed at South Asians. Officers also recovered various items featuring Nazi imagery.
In a court document, prosecutors noted that Paporakis allegedly authored an eight-page manifesto titled, “Why I fought: A.K.A. (Aurora Shooter’s Manifesto),” in which he described African American, Jewish, and Indian individuals as subhumans. He further characterized himself as a sociopathic white supremacist Neo Nazi who fantasized about mass murder.
A judge has ordered that Paporakis remain in custody while awaiting trial. His next scheduled court appearance is set for October 30.
