Aryna Sabalenka Suffers Shock Wuhan Open Exit After Upset Loss to Ann Li
Aryna Sabalenka's difficult run continues as top seed crashes out of the Wuhan Open following a dramatic three-set defeat to unseeded Ann Li.
POLICY WIRE — Wuhan, China — Aryna Sabalenka endured another setback in her challenging run of form on Wednesday, exiting the Wuhan Open in the round of 32 after a stunning defeat to unseeded American Ann Li.
The top-seeded Belarusian fell 3-6, 6-4, 7-6(5) at the WTA 1000 event, marking her second consecutive loss and extending a title drought that dates back to her triumphs at Indian Wells and Miami.
Li needed 10 match points to secure the biggest victory of her career, ultimately putting away the world No. 2 after Sabalenka mounted a gritty defense by saving nine match points in a tense three-set battle.
The tournament served as an opening match for Sabalenka, who received a first-round bye as the top seed in the absence of world No. 1 Elena Rybakina.
With the dramatic upset secured, Li advances to the round of 16 to face Janice Tjen, while Sabalenka faces fresh questions regarding her inconsistent form and a potential need for rest.
