Canada's Fairfax Financial Holdings secures a $5.56 billion deal for a majority stake in IDBI Bank, expanding its footprint in India's financial sector.
POLICY WIRE — New Delhi, India — Canadian investment firm Fairfax Financial Holdings has reached an agreement to acquire a controlling interest in India’s IDBI Bank. The strategic transaction carries a valuation of 528.78 billion Indian rupees, translating to approximately $5.56 billion.
Information Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw confirmed the cabinet approval on Wednesday following a rigorous, two-stage competitive bidding process. The divestment involves India’s federal government and the state-run Life Insurance Corp of India offloading a combined 60.72 percent equity stake in the institution.
Under the terms of the agreement, Fairfax will tender 81 rupees per share to secure the majority holding. The acquisition paves the way for the Canadian enterprise to take the helm of a lender boasting 4.44 trillion rupees in assets, marking a significant foreign investment milestone in India’s financial landscape.
The structural transition has been developing over a span of more than four years. Finalization of the buyout remains contingent upon receiving formal clearance from the Reserve Bank of India.
