POLICY WIRE — London, UK — Prime Minister Andy Burnham has unveiled a significant restructuring of the state pension triple lock, with the new measures scheduled to take effect in the 2030-31 period.
Under the existing framework, the government guarantees that the State Pension increases every April based on the highest of three specific metrics: average earnings growth, CPI inflation, or a flat 2.5%.
While the government will continue to adjust the State Pension annually starting in April 2030 to protect retirees, the Prime Minister indicated that the system will be modified.
Burnham cautioned that the reformed system will not continue to ratchet up in the same manner as the current triple lock mechanism has functioned.
New data from the investment platform AJ Bell suggests that individuals nearing retirement age will likely experience the least amount of disruption from these proposed changes.
Cole, an analyst on the matter, noted that the impact may be minimal for those who have recently entered retirement or are expected to do so shortly.
The overhaul follows Burnham’s previous assertions that the triple lock would be adjusted from 2030 onward should Labour secure victory in the next general election.
