POLICY WIRE — Kyiv, Ukraine — A massive overnight ballistic missile assault by Russian forces has struck the Ukrainian capital, resulting in two fatalities and leaving 21 others injured, according to Mayor Vitali Klitschko.
The strikes, which occurred between October 13 and 14, caused significant destruction within a residential neighborhood and targeted critical energy infrastructure throughout the city. Mayor Klitschko noted that this marks the first time in several months that the capital’s essential infrastructure has been purposefully attacked.
The offensive represents one of the most significant combined assaults on energy sites in recent months, impacting power facilities across Kyiv and various other regions. The mayor confirmed that the strikes caused severe strain on the electrical grid, leading to operational disruptions.
Previous drone strikes on October 10 had already caused widespread power outages, forcing the suspension of the Kyiv metro system and halting electric-powered public transport. Emergency crews are currently managing the aftermath of the latest bombardment as the city grapples with the damage to its municipal services.
