Critical Lung Cancer Symptoms to Recognize and Act On
Identify key lung cancer symptoms and take action. Learn the ABCD warning signs from a leading surgeon.
POLICY WIRE — London, UK — Lung cancer remains one of the most prevalent cancers in the UK, with approximately 50,200 new cases diagnosed annually, according to Cancer Research UK.
Despite its prevalence, many individuals remain unaware of the critical early warning signs of the disease. As Lung Cancer Awareness Month approaches in November, Tom Routledge, a consultant thoracic surgeon at HCA Healthcare UK’s London Bridge Hospital, has highlighted essential symptoms that should not be ignored.
Routledge outlined the ABCD framework for identifying potential lung cancer indicators: A for appetite loss and unexplained weight loss, often accompanied by fatigue; B for breathlessness, which can worsen over time; C for coughing up blood or persistent coughs; and D for chest pain, difficulty swallowing, or voice changes due to nerve pressure. He emphasized that even a single persistent symptom warrants medical attention.
Early diagnosis is crucial, as CT scans are considered the gold standard for detecting lung cancer in its initial stages. Unlike chest X-rays, which may miss small tumors, CT scans provide more accurate results. If detected early, treatment options such as surgery or radiotherapy offer a higher chance of successful outcomes.
Screening programs have expanded in the UK, targeting high-risk individuals aged 55 to 74 who are current or former smokers. However, access to these services is still limited to certain regions. Individuals in eligible areas may receive an invitation from their GP or local NHS service for lung health checks.
