UN Launches Aid Efforts in Nepal After New Floods Disrupt Communities
UN aids Nepal after fresh floods in Gorkha district. At least five missing, 95 rescued as aid trucks head to affected areas.
POLICY WIRE — Kathmandu, Nepal — The United Nations has mobilized emergency aid to Nepal following sudden flash floods in the central Gorkha district on Sunday, which destroyed homes and bridges just weeks after a major flood disaster in the northern region.
The floods, triggered by a landslide that blocked the Budhi Gandaki River, have left at least five people unaccounted for and 95 rescued, with hundreds more impacted. Authorities are working to assess the full extent of the damage as the UN coordinates relief efforts with local agencies.
The World Food Programme has dispatched three trucks carrying ready-to-eat meals and supplies to support those displaced by the flooding. The UN Food and Agriculture Organization reported damage to critical infrastructure, including roads, crops, and livestock, raising concerns about food security. Meanwhile, the UN Children’s Fund is conducting rapid assessments to prioritize aid, with pre-positioned emergency supplies available for immediate deployment.
