EU Expands Sanctions List to 1,646 Russian Targets in Largest Ever Move
EU adopts record 1,646 sanctions against Russia's military-industrial complex, marking biggest expansion since 2022 invasion.
POLICY WIRE — Brussels, Belgium — The European Union has approved a historic expansion of its sanctions against Russia, adding nearly 1,650 individuals and entities to its blacklist. This marks the largest single increase in the bloc’s punitive measures since the 2022 full-scale invasion of Ukraine.
The new designations, unanimously approved by EU ambassadors on October 7, focus heavily on Russia’s military-industrial complex, including those involved in missile production, drone manufacturing, and supply chains. Over half of the listings are tied to ballistic missile development, according to EU officials.
The move brings the total number of sanctioned names and organizations under the EU’s regime to nearly 4,650. The final adoption by EU foreign ministers is expected on October 12, with the package aiming to further isolate Moscow’s war economy and target key sectors like energy, finance, and military infrastructure.
