Mars’s Mysterious Cloud Defies Physics, Scientists Reveal
Scientists uncover exotic physics behind Mars's strange cloud. New study reveals unexpected atmospheric process on the Red Planet.
POLICY WIRE — Paris, France — A peculiar cloud on Mars has baffled scientists for years, but new research suggests it operates under unusual physical laws that challenge current understanding of planetary atmospheres.
The Arsia Mons Elongated Cloud, or AMEC, stretches over 1,800 kilometers and appears annually, growing and fading each morning. First observed in 2018, its formation has remained a mystery despite extensive study using data from the European Space Agency’s Mars Express spacecraft.

Researchers now believe they have solved the puzzle by incorporating previously theoretical physics into their models. According to lead author Jorge Hernández-Bernal, this involves a rare process called homogeneous nucleation, where water vapor directly forms ice particles without needing dust or other particles. This phenomenon, never before seen in a planetary atmosphere, could reshape how scientists study other worlds.
