Ikea to Close 3 Smaller Format Stores in U.S. This Fall
Ikea closing three smaller stores in D.C., Maryland, and Virginia this fall. Employees can relocate to nearby locations.
POLICY WIRE — Washington, D.C. — IKEA is shutting down three of its smaller-format stores in the U.S. as part of a broader shift in its retail strategy, according to recent reports.
The locations set to close include one in Georgetown, Washington, D.C., scheduled for October 18; another in Annapolis, Maryland, on October 30; and a third in Fairfax, Virginia, set to shut down on November 30, as reported by Retail Dive.
The company cited the move as part of an effort to build a more affordable, accessible, and sustainable future. Employees at the affected locations will have the chance to transfer to nearby stores in Baltimore, College Park, Maryland, and Woodbridge, Virginia.

IKEA emphasized that customers planning projects at the shuttered stores can continue their work at other locations or through online services with the help of remote planners. The plan-and-pickup format was designed to support large home projects while offering convenient pick-up options.
Some of the closed stores, like the Georgetown location, opened less than a year ago. This decision marks a shift from IKEA’s earlier focus on expanding smaller-format locations, which had included plans for nine new sites in 2023.
