France Sees 2,000 Arrests as Student Protests Turn Violent Nationwide
Violent student protests in France lead to 2,000 arrests and school closures. Learn what's driving the unrest.
POLICY WIRE — Paris, France — Over 2,000 individuals have been taken into custody across France as student-led demonstrations over education concerns have escalated into widespread unrest, with at least 400 schools set to remain closed on Friday.
The protests, initially centered on teacher shortages and crumbling school infrastructure, began in the Paris region last month and have since spread nationwide, resulting in injuries and significant property damage. Justice Minister Gerald Darmanin warned that an active and violent minority is involved, questioning whether all participants are actually high school students.

French Education Minister Edouard Geffray confirmed that more than 400 educational institutions will stay shut on Friday, while intelligence sources suggested the movement may have been organized by left-wing politicians, including members of La France Insoumise. LFI lawmaker Louis Boyard denied these claims, as student protesters set fires at two high schools and teachers were sprayed with petrol in Marseille. Riot police clashed with youths in Toulouse, and similar unrest was reported in Belgium’s Liège.
