POLICY WIRE — Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia — Malaysian former prime minister Najib Razak has requested a court to halt his 15-year prison sentence for his role in the 1MDB corruption scandal, with the decision set for October 14, according to his lawyer.
Najib, 73, has been in custody since 2022 after being convicted of graft and money laundering linked to the embezzlement of billions from the state fund 1MDB, which he helped establish during his time in office. He has consistently denied any wrongdoing.

Last week, Malaysia’s King Sultan Ibrahim Sultan Iskandar granted Najib a conditional pardon, allowing him to serve the remaining part of his original sentence under house arrest until August 2028, provided he pays a RM50 million fine. However, the court will determine if the additional 15-year sentence, imposed in a separate 1MDB-related case, will be suspended pending appeal.
