POLICY WIRE — Jackson, Miss. — Authorities in Mississippi believe Tasia Fortune’s body was hanged after she had already died, according to a detective’s testimony at a hearing Friday.

Det. Samuel Dukes testified that the scene was “staged,” citing the medical examiner’s opinion. While the exact cause of Fortune’s death remains undisclosed, authorities have ruled it a homicide and have arrested two men on murder charges. A third person is also wanted for questioning.

The case has sparked widespread attention, with some drawing comparisons to historical lynchings in the Southern state. Police have not yet explained why the defendants allegedly hung Fortune’s body after her death.
