Rescued Marineland Dolphin Echo Dies at Spanish Aquarium Following Health Complications
A dolphin rescued from Marineland Canada has died at Oceanogràfic València in Spain, marking the latest fatality among animals transferred from the park.
POLICY WIRE — València, Spain — A dolphin previously rescued from the troubled Marineland Canada amusement park has passed away just weeks after arriving at a prominent Spanish aquarium.
Oceanogràfic València, recognized as the largest aquarium in Europe, confirmed on Thursday that the animal, named Echo, arrived at the facility carrying severe vision impairments and additional medical complications that demanded specialized, individualized care.
The aquarium explained that Echo was immediately placed into the facility’s medical pool under veterinary supervision after developing respiratory complications and trouble swallowing.
Her physical condition declined at a rapid pace throughout Wednesday, culminating in her death later that same night.

Marineland Canada ceased operations in 2024 following the passing of its owners, though management retained custody of its remaining wildlife population, which included dolphins and 30 beluga whales.

By October 2025, the attraction issued warnings that it would be forced to euthanize the animals if proper relocation arrangements could not be secured.
An international transfer initiative was unveiled by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration in July 2026, facilitating the transport of 28 beluga whales to certified facilities across the United States, while the remaining two belugas were dispatched to Oceanogràfic València.
