Kyiv Under Heavy Aerial Assault as Russian Missile and Drone Strikes Hit Capital
Russian forces launched a massive overnight missile and drone attack on Kyiv, leaving at least 20 injured and damaging critical education infrastructure.
POLICY WIRE — Kyiv, Ukraine — Russian forces launched a coordinated drone and missile assault on the Ukrainian capital during the night of Sept. 16-17, resulting in at least 20 injuries and significant damage to an educational facility.
Explosions began echoing through the city center around 12:30 a.m. local time. The intensity escalated at 2:13 a.m. when ballistic missiles struck the capital, followed by a series of eight additional blasts shortly after 2:21 a.m.
Mayor Vitali Klitschko confirmed that 20 individuals were wounded in the barrage, with at least five victims requiring hospitalization. Air raid alerts remained active across the region, with drones spotted over the city as late as 7 a.m.
In other developments, Russian state media outlet TASS reported that Elena Astanina, a collaborator who chaired a Kremlin-backed election commission in occupied Tokmak, was killed in a Ukrainian drone strike on Sept. 15 in the village of Zhovtneve.

Ukraine’s General Staff also claimed a successful strike on two Russian S-400 air defense launchers in the Vygonychi district of Bryansk Oblast overnight. The S-400, valued at approximately $500 million, is a primary asset used by Russia to launch ballistic missiles at Ukrainian targets.
Separately, the Ukrainian Infrastructure Ministry reported that a Russian drone strike on a Tanzania-flagged civilian vessel in the Black Sea killed the captain and injured three crew members. The ministry condemned the ongoing targeting of commercial shipping and called for an international response.
Industrial infrastructure also faced renewed pressure as the Zaporizhstal Iron and Steel Works was struck by two ballistic missiles on the morning of Sept. 17. Metinvest, the plant’s owner, noted this was the fourth attack in a month, resulting in one hospitalization and significant damage to equipment.
Finally, the Coordination Headquarters for the Treatment of Prisoners of War announced the repatriation of 252 fallen Ukrainian citizens from Russia. The remains will undergo identification by law enforcement and interior ministry experts.
