POLICY WIRE — Cairo, Egypt — Hundreds of thousands of Iranians participated in a government-organized demonstration in Tehran on Friday, marking the largest such event since the war with the U.S. and Israel began. The rally, held in Revolution Square, featured military-style parades and public displays of national resolve.
The event, called “Janfada,” or “Sacrifice for Iran,” saw participants in combat uniforms carrying flags and chanting anti-American and anti-Israel slogans. It was organized by the Revolutionary Guard and aimed at reinforcing national unity amid economic hardship caused by U.S. sanctions and a naval blockade of Iranian ports.

Over 600,000 individuals had registered for military training, with officials predicting over 1 million would eventually participate. The rally also served as a platform to showcase military equipment, including drones and anti-aircraft systems, while officials claimed an attack on a Togo-flagged oil tanker in the Strait of Hormuz. The UK Maritime Trade Operations center reported that ship traffic through the region has dropped significantly compared to pre-war levels.
