Maine’s Endangered Atlantic Salmon Face Uncertain Future Despite River Restoration Efforts
Conservationists are removing dams to help endangered Atlantic salmon in Maine, but experts warn that climate change and ocean survival remain major hurdles.

The initiative, supported by $9.1 million in federal funding, aims to reconnect the river’s main stem to its upper reaches, providing fish access to cooler, more suitable spawning grounds.

Despite these efforts, experts remain cautious about the species’ long-term recovery. Fisheries biologist Rory Saunders of NOAA noted that high mortality rates at sea, largely attributed to climate change, continue to threaten the population. Current recovery goals require thousands of returning adults, a target that remains elusive as the state’s salmon population currently relies heavily on hatchery-raised fish.
Local community members and organizations like Project SHARE have spent decades clearing culverts and rehabilitating river habitats to support the fish. While the removal of the Cherryfield dam marks a significant milestone in connectivity, scientists emphasize that broader environmental factors, including warming water temperatures and shifting marine food sources, will ultimately dictate whether the Atlantic salmon can avoid extinction.
