POLICY WIRE — Utrecht, Netherlands — A rare 1,700-year-old fragment of Homer’s epic poem the ‘Odyssey’ has been discovered hidden within the pages of an old library book, according to researchers at Utrecht University.

The discovery was made by Dr. Mark de Kreij, a scholar at Radboud University in the Netherlands, during a project examining ancient manuscripts held by the university. The find, which dates back to around 300 AD, was initially thought to be a medieval document but was later identified as a section of the legendary Greek epic.

De Kreij, a Greek teacher, recognized the language on the small paper fragment and confirmed its origin from the ‘Odyssey.’ Only about 30 such fragments exist globally, making this one of the most significant finds in recent years. The piece is believed to have come from a pocket-sized version of the poem owned by someone living in Egypt’s Faiyum oasis.
