Trump Criticizes Fed After Rate Hike, Claims U.S. Credit Is ‘Best in the World’
Trump slams Fed after rate hike, claims U.S. credit is 'best in the world' and calls for lower rates.
POLICY WIRE — Washington, United States — President Donald Trump criticized the Federal Reserve following its first interest rate increase in over three years, claiming the U.S. has the best credit in the world and demanding rates be lowered to 1% or less.
In a post published on Wednesday, Trump argued that the country’s economic strength should result in lower borrowing costs, asserting that the federal funds rate—set by the central bank—should mirror the low interest rates typically offered to individuals with strong credit histories. He also claimed that ending trade deficits could generate at least $1.5 trillion annually, calling the term ‘deficit’ a synonym for ‘loss.’

The Fed raised its benchmark rate by a quarter point to a range of 3.75% to 4%, marking the first increase since 2023. The decision was made under Kevin Warsh, the chairman Trump appointed earlier this year, who has previously criticized the Fed for prolonged inflation. Despite Trump’s demands for rate cuts, the Fed signaled it expects one more increase this year and no changes in 2027, citing elevated inflation as a concern.
