The exclusion of India from the G7 summit in Canada is a major setback for Prime Minister Narendra Modi seeking a bigger global role. Once a strong influence, India now faces the consequences of how poorly its diplomacy has performed. The exclusion of Modi from this meeting reflects how India’s foreign policy has caused strains in its partnerships with major global players which had been healthy before. Being diplomatically isolated, Pakistan is now considered a major regional ally, while India’s place in the world has weakened.
India, which is not a member of the G7, has been invited to the summit for a long time. This shows how important India’s political and economic situation is becoming. During Manmohan Singh’s time as prime minister, India had a great reputation, and his officials went to foreign conferences all the time. During Modi’s time in government, however, there have been many worries about rising hostility within the country and with its neighbors, notably Pakistan. India will not go to the G7 meeting in 2025 for this reason.
This isn’t about timing in diplomacy; India’s withdrawal is a direct outcome of Modi’s terrible foreign policy, especially his hardening posture toward Pakistan and the worsening of ties with important Western countries. Modi has lied when he said that his diplomacy had made progress throughout the world. His reputation as a world leader has suffered because he has failed to resolve conflicts with neighboring countries, notably in Kashmir, and because of some of his internal actions that have received condemnation from other countries. Because of these concerns, India is no longer formally recognized by the worldwide groups it was supposed to lead. This is shown by the fact that India was not officially invited to the G7 summit.
Trouble between India and Canada highlights how it struggles to work with other nations. Justin Trudeau said in 2023 that it was the Indian government that killed pro-Khalistan separatist leader Hardeep Singh Nijjar. As the accusation caused such disagreement, the ambassadors had to go home and diplomatic relations between the two countries quickly ended. Even though it rejects the charges, India’s relations with Canada have cooled greatly and Canada has risen to become among the countries most willing to stand by India in the international arena.
One main reason India wasn’t invited to the G7 conference is that it broke off diplomatic relations with Canada. Trudeau’s administration in Canada has made it plain that India can’t take part in high-level international negotiations until it addresses the present problem. No G7 member, including Canada, should risk their reputation by meeting with a country that has a history of major problems. On the flip side, Pakistan hasn’t changed its diplomatic position. The government is putting in a lot of effort to foster stronger connections with key figures globally. This shows that it plays a moral role in global issues and makes discussions about security and human rights more complex.
Because of its tensions with neighboring countries, mainly Pakistan, India is shut out from the global community. While India has regularly caused tensions along the LoC in Kashmir, Pakistan has kept asking for a peaceful solution and talks. Trying to handle the challenges in Kashmir has been very difficult. Pakistan and a number of other joining in condemning Modi for changes such as stripping Kashmir of Article 370. As a result, the problem has increased.
Pakistan has preferred to find diplomatic approaches whenever there are regional issues. Because of its achievements in territorial security, Pakistan is recognized globally as an important contributor to global safety work. By contrast, Pakistan has shown that it can be trusted to encourage peace and stability in the region. India does not do the same thing. India is losing its reputation as Pakistan’s improves because they handle diplomacy quite differently.
Modi calling India a “Vishwaguru” is beginning to cause more controversy. India has not been able to establish lasting diplomatic connections necessary for participating in groups such as the G7 because of him. The current government appears to higher value manipulating stories to support nationalism than reaching out to form diplomatic relationships. The latest case of diplomatic error is that India stayed away from the G7 summit. Such reactions result from the chain reaction process.
Many people say the government has always wanted India to be a global superpower, but its strategy has been limited because it is not one of the G7’s leading nations. India’s activities, both at home and internationally, are driving some countries, like Canada, not want to be as close to India. Pakistan, on the other hand, has a reputation for being serious about working with its neighbors to achieve peace and improve international discourse.
India is experiencing problems with its diplomatic connections, while Pakistan has proved that it can handle complicated global alliances efficiently. Pakistan is now seen as a mature player on the international arena because it has cooperated with China on diplomatic matters, the US on anti-terrorism measures, and the UN on peacekeeping missions. People say that Pakistan’s leaders are realistic, diplomatic, and willing to work together. On the other hand, India’s leaders are getting more aggressive and distant.
Pakistan has always attempted to get along with its neighbors, notably China, Afghanistan, and Russia. This is not the same as what India did without warning. Pakistan has improved its standing in the globe by engaging in diplomacy, which is supported by its robust military and strategic alliances. Pakistan has always sought to settle regional issues amicably, which is why it has received support from other countries. India’s careless acts, on the other hand, have closed the country off from the rest of the globe.
India’s absence from the G7 conference is more than just a diplomatic disaster; it demonstrates how Modi’s strong foreign policies and lack of action on problems at home are leaving India more cut off from the rest of the globe. Pakistan is a trustworthy and responsible partner in the region, but India’s foreign policy has turned important world powers away.
