POLICY WIRE — Jerusalem, Israel — A report in Haaretz claims that the President of the United Arab Emirates warned Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu about an impending Hamas offensive just days before the October 7, 2023, attack.

According to the newspaper, UAE President Mohammed bin Zayed spoke with Netanyahu 10 days prior and warned that Hamas leader Yahya Sinwar was planning a major operation. The UAE president reportedly expressed concerns that the attack could lead to widespread bloodshed and threaten regional stability, including the Abraham Accords.

However, Haaretz reported that Netanyahu responded with “relative calm,” assuring bin Zayed that Israel was prepared for any scenario and that an attack was more likely to come from the occupied West Bank. Netanyahu’s office has since called the report an “absolute lie” and denied any communication with the UAE leader during the period in question.
