Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen reiterated that the people of Greenland have consistently rejected the idea of becoming American. Danish Foreign Minister Lars Løkke Rasmussen described the post as disturbing, suggesting it reflects a maximalist vision that the international community must work to contain.

Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum also pushed back, asserting that her country’s sovereignty is non-negotiable. She emphasized that Mexico will never be a colony or protectorate of any foreign power, describing the U.S. as a nation currently struggling with its own leadership.

The social media activity occurred over Labor Day weekend, during which Trump also shared images renaming New Mexico to New America and an AI-generated video showing him striking Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney. Reports indicate that top aide Natalie Harp was present with the president at his New Jersey golf club during this period.

These provocations coincide with a series of aggressive foreign policy actions, including the deposition of Venezuelan leader Nicolás Maduro and the seizure of that nation’s oil industry. The administration has also engaged in intense economic pressure against Cuba and remains involved in conflicts in Iran and various trade disputes.

Eirikur Bergmann, a politics professor at Bifrost University, noted the shifting perception of the U.S. among its allies. He observed that while Icelanders once viewed the U.S. as a defender, the current climate has transformed that protector into an intimidator.
