POLICY WIRE — Nottingham, United Kingdom — A panel of experts has informed the Nottingham Inquiry that the death of Barnaby Webber during the 2023 stabbing spree could have been avoided with different medical intervention at the scene.

Webber, a 19-year-old student, was one of three individuals killed by Valdo Calocane, a man suffering from paranoid schizophrenia. The inquiry is currently examining the circumstances surrounding the tragedy.

The findings suggest that a survival chance existed for at least one of the victims had the medical response been altered. Alongside Webber, Grace O’Malley-Kumar, also 19, and Ian Coates were killed by Calocane during the early hours of the attack.

Evidence presented to the inquiry revealed that Calocane had been detained under mental health legislation on four separate occasions prior to the fatal incident. The panel’s assessment highlights critical questions regarding the emergency care provided to Webber immediately following the assault.
