Melania Trump to Skip Dallas Midterm Summit Amid Growing GOP Lawmaker Absence

POLICY WIRE — Dallas, USA — Melania Trump will not attend President Donald Trump’s upcoming two-day midterm convention in Dallas, marking a significant absence as the president seeks to build momentum for the November elections.

A White House representative confirmed to The Independent that the first lady will skip the Republican gathering, a detail first highlighted by The Washington Examiner, though the official declined to provide further explanation.

The first lady is not alone in her absence. At least 45 Republican lawmakers have informed Politico that they will not attend the summit.

Reasons for the lawmakers’ absences vary, including personal commitments such as weddings, college tours for teenage children, and dove hunting trips.

Some legislators argued that their time is better utilized campaigning within their own districts rather than attending the event.

Financial concerns also played a role, with some officials balking at the $25,000 entrance fee required for a seat.

One unnamed Republican dismissed the convention as a waste of time, stating, “You shouldn’t be having to rally your base at this point. You should be trying to convince independents.”

Other lawmakers expressed worry that being closely linked to the president could hurt their own electoral chances, given his approval ratings currently languishing in the low 30s due to the affordability crisis and the war in Iran.

Michigan Rep. Tom Barrett explained his decision to stay away by saying, I can’t control what the president’s going to say at the convention, but I can control where I’m at, what I’m doing.

House Speaker Mike Johnson defended the event, noting he has been promoting it widely. He remarked that while colleagues must make their own choices, those who attend will have a great time.

The event will take place at the American Airlines Center, where President Trump will be the primary focus, speaking on September 9 and 10.

The president is reportedly offering roundtable appearances for $250,000 and photo opportunities for $88,600, while Vice President JD Vance will be available for a lower cost.

Despite the Republican National Committee’s optimism, the televised summit faces potential hurdles, as it coincides with the NFL season opener and occurs just one day before the 25th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks.

This absence continues a pattern of limited public visibility for the first lady that dates back to the 2024 campaign.

Her most notable appearance during that window was the final night of the Republican National Convention in Milwaukee, where she supported the president following the assassination attempt in Butler, Pennsylvania.

More recently, she was seen at the Freedom 250 Grand Prix in Washington on August 23. Prior to that, she spoke at a White House Rose Garden event for foster care, where she joked to reporters, “Good afternoon, I heard you missed me. Here I am.”

Analysis from the Daily Beast indicates Melania Trump has appeared publicly on only 40 days this year, missing the funeral of Sen. Lindsey Graham and the redone White House Correspondents’ Dinner.

However, she has remained active in other capacities, including appearing in a $40 million Amazon documentary and holding a surprise press conference to deny links to Jeffrey Epstein and criticize Jimmy Kimmel.

On the policy front, she championed the bipartisan Take It Down Act against explicit deepfakes and revenge porn, and opened back-channel talks with Vladimir Putin to recover Ukrainian children.

These efforts did not shield her adviser, Marc Beckman, from criticism after he claimed this summer that she was the most “consequential” first lady in U.S. history.
