Uncertainty Looms as White House Prepares for First Press Briefing in Weeks

POLICY WIRE — Washington, D.C. — The White House has scheduled its first press briefing in over a month, yet the individual who will stand at the podium remains a mystery following the recent departure of Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt.

Leavitt officially stepped down last week, and no successor has been announced. Despite critical issues such as the ongoing conflict with Iran and the approaching midterm elections, it has been 40 days since a Trump administration official last faced reporters in the White House briefing room.

A White House spokesperson has verified that the much-anticipated press briefing is set for Thursday. However, the host for the event is still unknown. Multiple outlets, including The Independent, have sought comments from the White House.

The last press briefing occurred on July 23, conducted by Leavitt shortly after her return from maternity leave. During her absence, various Trump officials, including Vice President JD Vance and Secretary of State Marco Rubio, temporarily took her place.

Although formal press briefings have been absent, White House correspondents have maintained regular contact with President Donald Trump through various events and informal interactions.

On August 21, Trump humorously remarked to reporters that he has received an unprecedented number of job applications for the press secretary position. Several names have been suggested as potential replacements for Leavitt since Trump announced her departure in early August to focus on her family.

Among the speculated candidates are Scott Jennings, a conservative CNN commentator and former Mitch McConnell staffer, White House Communications Director Steven Cheung, and Principal Deputy Press Secretary Anna Kelly.

Leavitt expressed mixed emotions about her final day, acknowledging the unique challenges and rewards of her role. She emphasized the importance of understanding that President Trump is his own best spokesperson, offering this insight to her successor.

Leavitt will rejoin MAGA Inc., the super PAC supporting the president, and continue as one of Trump’s key external advisors.
