POLICY WIRE — Washington, USA — In a strategic political move ahead of the November elections, the House passed a resolution condemning socialism in all its forms on Tuesday.

The vote concluded with a 220 to 192 to 2 decision, marking a notable bipartisan moment as eight Democrats joined all Republicans in favor. Two Democrats chose to vote present.

This resolution was orchestrated by GOP leaders in response to the Democratic primary voters’ support for several democratic socialist candidates. Republicans linked these victories to their campaign for President Trump’s SAVE America Act, a voting regulations bill stalled in the Senate.

House Majority Leader Steve Scalise, a Louisiana Republican, criticized not only socialism but also the notion of non-American citizens voting, a stance he attributed to the Democratic Socialists of America.

Despite a few Republican dissenters delaying the vote over a short-term government funding bill, the resolution moved forward with the help of two moderate Democrats, Jared Golden of Maine and Marie Gluesenkamp Perez of Washington.
