POLICY WIRE — Mackenzie, Canada — A perplexing floating island has resurfaced in British Columbia’s Williston Reservoir, captivating the attention of locals and officials alike. This enigmatic landmass, covered in mature trees, was first spotted earlier this summer before vanishing without a trace.
The island was recently found again, approximately 18 miles northwest of its previous location in the reservoir. Its sudden reappearance has fueled curiosity and excitement, with videos of the island circulating virally on local social media platforms.
Bob Gammer, a representative from B.C. Hydro, expressed enthusiasm about the rediscovery, noting that the island is currently not causing any issues. He highlighted the intrigue surrounding its intermittent appearances and disappearances.
Although the exact origins of the island remain unconfirmed, B.C. Hydro speculates that record-high water levels may have caused it to detach from the reservoir’s shoreline. The reservoir has experienced unusually high water levels this year due to heavy winter snow and summer rainstorms.
Gammer also suggested that strong winds are likely responsible for the island’s movement across the reservoir. He explained that while the water current moves slowly eastward towards the dam, it is the wind that primarily drives the island’s motion.

Estimates place the island’s dimensions at approximately 230 feet wide and 460 feet long, comparable to the size of two NFL football fields. Satellite imagery confirmed its presence in the reservoir on July 21, but it had vanished by August 5.
Gammer noted that the island might reappear if strong winds arise again. The mysterious floating island continues to mystify and fascinate those who encounter it.
